Over Twenty Years of Science Learning

Explore our story and impact since 2002

Our History

Dr. Ricky Stern founded “e” inc.’s teaching program in 2002 at an empty Boston Housing Authority apartment as a free after-school program for local children in Charlestown, MA. Ever since, “e” inc. has dedicated itself to fostering science literacy and environmental involvement among urban children, youth, and families. With a central focus on the integration of science skills and knowledge paired with hands-on actions, “e” inc. has successfully changed children into inspired investigators and problem-solvers through its excellent science programming.

Over its 23-year history, “e” inc. has served over 15,000 youth across day schools, after-school programs, and out-of-school youth initiatives in two cities. “e” inc.’s impact is evident in the consistent rise in pre-to-post science test scores across all day and after-school sites, highlighting its ability to increase our learner's science literacy.

We currently provide science educational programs impacting over 1,400 students each year across 6 day schools and 14 after-school/community centers in the following underserved communities: East Boston, Chinatown, Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury, Charlestown, and Cambridge.

Our Edge

Residency Model

We are the only nonprofit in Greater Boston that delivers environmental science education in a residency model. By embedding our educators directly in schools, afterschool programs, community centers, and even homeless shelters, through weekly programming, we allow strong and trusted relationships to flourish between educators and students.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is uniquely broad, rigorous, and standards-aligned (MCAS) allowing schools to choose from among 17 different subject areas that best align with their own academic goals for each year.

Hands-on Natural Science

We teach foundational science concepts through the lens of the Natural World. While others may focus on environmental challenges or nature appreciation, we focus on the “why” and “how” of the science guiding science systems. We believe that science is the environment—and that helping students understand the natural systems around them is key to developing scientifically literate and environmentally conscious citizens.

Science Where Most Needed

We reach students where they are. Our programs serve diverse learners in under-resourced communities, and we adapt instruction to meet the needs of English-language learners, students with learning differences, and those facing social and economic barriers to success.

Developing Environmental Stewardship

We bridge knowledge with empowerment. “e” inc. doesn’t just teach facts; rather we equip students to take action, solve problems, and see themselves as capable environmental citizens and future leaders.
